DOUGLAS LANE WETTENHALL, WINSFORD CHESHIRE
VENDOR INTERVIEW
Nestling in 180 acres of farmland, these three new barn conversions at Wettenhall in Cheshire, have been inspired by the heritage and tradition of their surroundings.
The homes have been a labour of love for John Woodward, whose family has owned the farm for three generations. "The farm itself is still operational," says John, "but when we sold off our dairy herd two years ago we looked at these three beautiful brick-built buildings which are around 200 years old and realised they had the potential to be wonderful homes."
"But my wife, Alison, and I had a very specific brief. We wanted these homes to be spacious and built with quality. We wanted them to be private and secure and to really make the most of the wonderful setting and the beautiful views across to the Cheshire Plain and the Beeston and Peckforton Hills."
So Alison and John appointed architects to make the dream a reality. "Once the designs were in place we knew we wanted to use the best local craftsmen we could find," says John. "We also made sure we used quality, traditional materials even down to individual window frames to preserve the heritage of the buildings. But we've also included high-spec, modern fittings such as category 5 cabling and underfloor heating so that these are traditional buildings which require minimum upkeep."
The first property, The Coach House, has four bedrooms two of which are en-suite. "This house has a stunning living room which is a great space for relaxing and entertaining," says John. "The master bedroom suite has wonderful high ceilings with exposed trusses plus an en-suite and walk-in wardrobe. It has two feature round windows and altogether windows to three sides with glorious views. We believe this building was once a coach house as it has three very large archways which we have preserved as part of the design. The centre arch has become the front door surrounded by glass and the arches either side have been fully glazed creating beautiful windows which make the rooms wonderfully light."
The second barn, Swallow House, is the corner of the development and has wonderful views across rolling countryside to the Delamere Hills. "This house has been designed over three floors," says John, "and has a total of five bedrooms, three with ensuite and a master bathroom. Every bedroom features original beams and the master bedroom has the traditional high ceilings. On the second floor is the fifth bedroom, plus a large galleried landing and seating area with exposed trusses. It has a porthole window with great views from such a high position. It's a very peaceful place and would be lovely for relaxing or as an extra area for a teenager to have as their own space." Downstairs, both the dining room and the large living room open out onto the large patio. Swallow House gets its name from the birds that could always be seen flying in and out of the building when it was used as a barn.
Brambles is the third barn on the development and is a total of 5,200 square feet over three floors. "When you first walk in your eye is drawn to a feature window on the stairs," says John. "It's an open staircase with a turned landing that has a massive picture window." Downstairs, the house has all the requirements of a quality family home. "I think here the kitchen / living area is particularly impressive," says John. It's a large kitchen with an island unit and is finished with white gloss units and a black granite worktop. It then leads into the dining / living space which has two French windows leading to the huge patio that stretches the length of the house." Upstairs, Brambles has five bedrooms, four with en-suites to the first floor. On the second floor there's an opportunity to really create the home of your dreams. "It could be two or three more bedrooms," says John. "Or it could become a home cinema, a gym, an office - the possibilities are endless! It's an open plan space which is more than 60 foot long and the light floods in through roof light windows."
John and Alison have seen their dream for these barns become a reality. "We are going to stay in the farmhouse as we truly think this is a wonderful place to live," says John. Sitting on the Cheshire Plain, the barns are less than a mile from the village of Wettenhall. Crewe is about 15 minutes away and Chester is about half an hour's drive.
