ST. MARY'S DRIVE, WHITEGATE CHESHIRE
VENDOR INTERVIEW
When Christine Orchard gave her husband Nigel a set of requirements for their new home, she was delighted when his choice matched one particular request. "We were living in Belgium so he did the house-hunting with a long list of what I wanted and the last thing on it was for the house to be near a golf club," she laughs. "He told me he thought this house matched most of the things I wanted but there was an extra surprise, so when we drove up and saw the house near the third tee, it was so beautiful it took my breath away."

The couple and their three children have certainly enjoyed their surroundings over the past five years. "I wanted a spot where we could go for really long walks with the dog and there are so many lovely places, either through wooded areas or near lakes and ponds," Christine explains. "Whitegate Way is a famous route nearby which used to be an old train line but is now a walk. We've spent a lot of time walking, especially at the golf club and my handicap has improved considerably since we've been here."

The family have plenty of open space of their own to relax or play in. "The garden is a good size and easy to look after and there is a bit for everyone," says the owner. "There are different patios so you can be in sun or shade at different times of day but it's also quite a fun garden and not too formal with lots of space for the children and their friends to kick a ball about."

Summer means barbecues for the family but they also have many memories of great entertaining indoors. "For Easter we had lots of people here but you can split up around the house because there are so many different reception rooms," Christine adds. "For my daughter's 21st birthday we had drinks in the sitting room, followed by a move to our large hallway which I'd decorated with memorabilia. We finished in the kitchen where we'd set up a number of tables to give a really long banquet effect."

With its wood-burning stove, the kitchen is Christine's preferred place to relax. "Even in winter it's really cosy and I spend a lot of time there reading. I also like the family room with all its bookshelves and two big sofas which are great for flopping on - it has that "lived in" feel," she admits. "In the formal sitting room there's a piano and my son, who is quite a musician, used to prefer the atmosphere of that room. He said it was just right for practising."

With five bedrooms and a number of bathrooms upstairs, the Orchard's home has accommodated many guests. "My son would bring his rowing team back to sleep over and it never felt crowded," Christine says. "The problem is that my baby has now gone to university so I feel like I am rattling around. This house is ideal for a family growing up or for one with teenagers because there's so much space on the driveway for cars. Our intention was always to have the house full of children and all their friends. We've done that and now it's time for me to spend more time at the golf club than looking after such a big home!"
