RECTORY LANE, SOUTHOE CAMBRIDGESHIRE
When the property is described as a small country estate, this is no idle boast because it is so spacious it offers a different living area for every season. “It’s built on the footprint of the barns that were here so it has three wings around a courtyard area,” explains the owner. “There is the part with two bedrooms which I use as my winter quarters while the rest are my summer quarters.” The owner designed and built the house himself, to blend perfectly with the Cambridgeshire countryside.
There are nine large bedrooms and a substantial number of reception rooms. They include two kitchens, an orangery, a bar room, wine cellar, utility room and games room. “There are sitting rooms where I love to relax and do the crossword,” adds the owner, “while the main lounge is 15 foot high and is so huge that it emulates the barn which used to be here.”
Following strict planning guidelines, this home blends seamlessly into its surroundings while maintaining an individual air. “There are some traditional features such as fireplaces and a double staircase which leads up to a lounging area on the first floor,” the owner says. “We have two kitchens which are both a country design but one is dark while the other is a lighter style. All of the ground floor is tiled but each room is a different design and I have enjoyed decorating every room with its own theme including the china room where I keep terracotta warriors.”
Building this wonderful detached house at Rectory Lane was something of a new venture for the owner. “I had been in industry before and ran several companies but although I’d done the odd extension, I’d never built, so I was looking for a plot of land and this came up,” he explains. “There are 12 acres with the house where I keep Highland cattle for show so I’ve certainly adapted to rural life.”
The nearby village of Southoe is itself a few miles from the town of St Neots where all the main amenities are at hand. “The town has all the normal high street shops, pubs and restaurants you’d need,” he says, “but we’re so close to the A1 that it is also easy to commute into Peterborough, Cambridge or even London.”
Although life may be quiet in Southoe, 2 Rectory Lane – which overlooks the village church – has been a hive of activity during the past 10 years. “I’ve done lots of entertaining and held many charity events, one every three months in fact!” he remembers. “The barn is panelled so it looks almost medieval and cries out for big gatherings. I have had up to 100 people here for all sorts of fundraising events; from Burns nights and cabaret evenings to medieval banquets and weddings.”
No longer as immersed in village life, the owner is looking to move on but he believes his home offers amazing potential and flexibility. “Its size and space means you can do so many different things with it,” he concludes. “I wanted to build it but now it’s ready for someone who wants a small country estate and the room to do whatever they want.”
