ROACHILL SOUTH MOLTON, SOUTH MOLTON DEVON

'The old Smithy' is a deceptive cottage, once inside there is spacious and adaptable accommodation that looks south over pristine gardens and beyond to rolling countryside. There is character and a certain quirkiness to the cottage, with features being the period fireplaces, stripped wooden doors, guest suite accommodation and the fine conservatory with magnificent outlook over well manicured gardens.
History: by the owners
Mr and Mrs Brittain-Long:
In the middle ages, the road running through Roachill was an old drovers road leading to the markets at the Ansteys, and Roachill was the middle-ages equivalent of a modern motorway service area, catering for their needs. The adjoining property, Roachill House, was an Inn. Our sitting room and main bedroom was then the 'one up, one down' living quarters for the brewer. Our dining room and second bedroom was another 'one up one down' housing the blacksmith and his family. His workshop/forge was what is now the guest suite/bedroom 2 which at that time was free standing and the main house ended at the dining room. All the properties at that time were thatched and 100 to 150 years ago a fire swept through Roachill gutting them all. When they were rebuilt the Kitchen/bathroom section was added, joining the old workshop/forge to the main house and incorporating typically high Victorian ceilings. Since the present owners have been at the property, nearly twenty years now, the conservatory/sun lounge and double garage have been added, and the large workshop/forge, which was virtually derelict, converted into the guest suite. The roof has been reslated and all windows, other than those in the conservatory, replaced with double glazed units.
