WENNY ROAD, CHATTERIS CAMBRIDGESHIRE
"When you sweep up the drive to the house, the beautiful front door, with the fine glasswork above it, gives such a good impression - and it's an impression the rest of the property really lives up to."

For Dermont and Betty, the Manor House has been a home full of character and also full of life. "I'm one of a family of 10 and we've had some superb gatherings here," says Betty. "It's seemed like we've had all their husbands and children tucking into hog roasts right here in the kitchen. This has been a great family home. It's so big you can have something going on in one part of the house and people in another won't be aware of it at all. It's also a place that's full of original features. The oldest part dates from the 1770s and it's full of very high ceilings, ornate cornices, original doors, wide floorboards and box sash windows. We've even got the original servants' bells in the hall - although we don't still use them!"

"One of the places I enjoy most is the lounge," adds Dermont. "It has one of my favourite toys; the log burner. It's fantastic. It sucks in all the cold air, heats it up and then pumps this lovely warm air back into the room. I love sitting in front of that fire, with my feet up, enjoying a good malt whiskey. We're also surrounded by fabulous views. The house sits in the middle of 1.35 acres, which are walled or fenced all the way around. The land behind is ancient meadowland and there's actually a covenant which says it can't be built on - which is fabulous as it means we have lots of country views and lots of wildlife. We have muntjac deer, woodpeckers, hawks and owls and even a few rabbits."

As well as suiting family life, the Manor House has also been an ideal business base. "I've retired now," explains Dermont, "but when I was self employed I ran my business from here. A separate door led into my own office, which worked really well in terms of meeting clients. The sheer number of outbuildings, and the potential they have, is another great asset. We've got a whole range of brick 'dockey huts', which is where farm produce was packed and the workers used to gather to eat their lunch. We've got a 40 foot barn, part of which we use as a garage and another converted building which the previous owner used to run their IT business from. Then there are the original stables where the six horses that used to pull the Lord of the Manor's coach used to bed down. So the place is packed with potential for future uses.

"For somewhere in the middle of The Fens we've also got really good connections. We're right on the outskirts of Chatteris, which is a very good little market town. It's got everything you need - a few supermarkets, modern facilities and two or three good pubs. There are some excellent schools in the area too. We also have great access onto the A1 and the A14. We can be in Huntingdon in 20 minutes and there are direct trains from there to Liverpool Street and King's Cross. Cambridge is only about a 30 minute drive away. In fact the Manor House has suited us in all respects - the only reason we're moving is that now the kids have sprung the nest, the property is just too big for us. This house has really impressed us though - I'm sure the next owners will feel the same."
