The Hall has played host to various historic figures, a number of whom hid from the priest hunters in the 16th Century reformation period. Most famous of these is the Catholic Saint, Edward Campian, who resided there for two years during the catholic persecution of Cromwell. He and his famous mobile alter that he used to perform secret mass services were hidden by the sympathetic Worthington family in what was then moated property. Traces of the moat can still be seen today.
