VENDOR INTERVIEW
You rarely find a home which completely fulfils all your criteria and the design of the perfect house is usually left locked in your dreams. But for the current owners, Pete and Tracy, Pete being an architect helped and Pigsnook is very much a reality. It's a unique house built over three storeys and with quality of life being the driving force behind its design. Each element is finished to an extremely high standard, perfectly geared to modern living yet with the use of a lot of reclaimed wood giving this home a depth of character.
"It took us quite a while to find this plot," explains Pete. "We restricted ourselves to a six mile radius in this area when we were looking for land and we grabbed the chance when this came up. The site is elevated and as you lift your head on the first and second floors you are met with some stunning views stretching sometimes forty miles across the Cheshire Plains.
"In building this home our ambition was to maximise the amount of accommodation in the house. When we moved in we had a teenage son and the third storey was designed with him in mind so he would have his own suite of rooms. But we wanted a large amount of space everywhere with different levels for different areas. Our lounge is a few steps down from the dining room and inner hall. It works very well acoustically and from this room you can get onto our patio leading to the covered hot tub which is used all year round. The temperature of the water is set at 37.5 degrees C and even in winter there is something great about sitting in a plume of steam."
The kitchen too is designed with family living and enjoyment in mind and once again finished to a very high standard. This leads into the Garden room which has a beautiful hardwood bay window looking out into the garden and it's somewhere the family tend to congregate.
But any family here will never be short of space with one entire wing of this house devoted to leisure. On the first floor is a large games room; on the ground floor below is a cinema room with a motorised screen which drops down from the ceiling and in the basement is a snooker room. In addition to this the house is fully wired for a state of the art sound system. "These things are very important to us as a family," explains Pete. "The cinema room is mainly for the football but then the children obviously watch their films in there as well."
Safety for the couple has always been a key issue and the house is fitted with a high pressure mist sprinkler system. It's triggered by signals from a fire alarm and smoke detectors. "We feel it's very important," says Pete. "If it's called into action it provides a safe escape route for our family and you can't do less than that for the people you love."
Pigsnook is cutting edge on so many levels but a note of history is never far away. The staircases and hand turned balustrades are made from reclaimed pitch pine. "This is wood which has been taken out of the demolished mills of Lancashire," adds Pete. "It's absolutely beautiful and once we had had it cut we then had it turned for the spindles used all over the house and created our main staircase.
Pigsnook is built on the site of outbuildings used for a former pig farm and some of the original farm buildings are two minutes walk away over the fields with an excellent farm shop attached. "It's a superb asset to have so close and people come from miles around to buy meat from the butchers," says Pete. "The nearest primary school is just over two miles away and the well regarded secondary school Tarporley High is five minutes drive. For a wider range of shops we tend to head to Chester 15 minutes away but Nantwich is about the same distance from us in the opposite direction.
"We love this area and we're not moving far - in fact we're designing another house very similar to this one!"
